ACT TWO:

The curtain rises on the hall set, only it’s changed, where a bank of lockers used to be, there is now a snack machine, and posters are slapped up everywhere promoting the anti-PDA coalition (AAPDAC).  The cast is in a frozen picture; Kristina is at the snack machine, the others lounging on tables and chairs to help represent the cafeteria.  Brittney is hit with a spot light.

Scene One: The Cafeteria

BRITTNEY:

Let’s see.  When we last left our friends, the protest rally had just begun, right?  Right.  Well, we are two weeks into the campaign.  Students have completely stopped wearing ID’s, and there is a one period delay in the office because of referrals.  Most teachers are on the verge of giving up, some already have.  The principal is under a lot of pressure now from the school board.  Partially because of the protest and partially because of the media coverage that’s backing the students.  However, the big reason is the constant group of activists outside the admin building protesting the PDA rule.  Many students, straight and gay, are protesting as well, getting pictures of administrators, and faculty not stopping straight people.  They have video evidence of those who do get stopped.  The principal is being forced to back down.

In the mean time, our friends are trying to enjoy a lunch break.  However, the school has begun a counter-attack.  It has raised vending machine prices, and lunch prices.

KRISTINA:

Anyone got 25 cents I can borrow?

JACOB:

            Yeah, why?

KRISTINA:

Prices have risen on the snack machine again.  $1.00 a pop.

AARIKA:

            You’re kidding right?

KRISTINA:

            If only.

KRISTEN:

Well, you know what they say, money makes the world go ‘round.

AARIKA:
            I thought it was love.

KRISTEN:
Sure, if you’re Mary Tyler Moore.

AARIKA:
            Money?

KRISTEN:

Money.

ALL:

Money makes the world go round

The world go round

The world go round

Money makes the world go around

That clinking, clanking sound

That makes the world go round

A marc, a yen, a buck or a pound

A buck or a pound

A buck or a pound

Is all that makes the world go around

That clinking clanking sound,

That makes the world go round

When you haven’t any coal in your stove and you freeze in the winter and you curse to the wind at your fate

When you haven’t any shoes on your feet, your coat’s thin as paper and you look thirty pounds underweight

When you go to get a word from the fat little pastor he will tell you to love ever more, but when hunger comes to rat-rat-a-tat at the window.

Who’s there?

BOYS:
Hunger

GIRLS:
Oooh! Hunger!

ALL:

See how love flies the door

For!

Money makes the world go round

(They collapse in a heap as the bell rings.  Jordan and Garrett start to walk off, as do Jacob and Meaghan.  The following dialogue occurs quickly)

JORDAN:

Look, Garrett, these past few weeks have been-

JACOB:

Amazing.  You are one of the nicest and most open-

JORDAN:

Guys I’ve ever met.  However, the media has gotten really involved, and you’re showing up on the news, and I just don’t feel comfortable with us as a couple anymore.  I’m sorry, I love you, but I don’t want to be found out.

JACOB:
Girls I know.  You speak what’s on your mind, you aren’t afraid of hurting people’s feelings, and who cares about political correctness.  But, I can’t take it anymore, and rather then force you to change, and since I can’t change-

MEAGHAN:
More like you don’t want to change.

JACOB:
That isn’t the point.  The point is-

MEAGHAN AND GARRETT:

            You’re breaking up with me.

JORDAN AND JACOB:

            Yeah.

GARRETT:
            I don’t believe this.

JORDAN AND JACOB:
            I’m sorry.

MEAGHAN:

Go please.

GARRETT:
            Please go.

(The music vamps up as the two exit quickly.  The two look after them and then to the audience as they sing.)

MEAGHAN AND GARRETT:

I don’t believe this.  Well, I refuse.  I absolutely refuse.

I’m not living without you

There’s just no way

No way

Tear down the mountains

Yell, scream and shout
you can say what you want

I’m not walking out

Stop up the rivers

Push, strike and kill

I’m not gonna leave you

There’s no way I will

And I am telling you

I’m not going

You’re the best man

I’ve ever known

There’s no way I can ever go

No, no, no, no way

No, no, no, no way

That I’m living without you

I’m not living without you

I’m not living without you

I don’t want to be free

I’m staying

I’m staying

And you’re,

You’re gonna love me!

(The lights fade to black and come up on Brittney again.)

Scene Two: The Theatre Room

BRITTNEY:

The days drag on.  Jacob has begun to develop a mutual interest in Randi, and Jordan still likes Garrett.  Unfortunately, while Garrett would take him back, Jordan won’t make a move.  His reason?  Jordan just isn’t ready to commit like that, and let the world see who he truly is.  The two newly singles are moping around.

(The lights come up on the class set; Aarika, Garrett and Meaghan are the only ones in it.)

MEAGHAN:

            Uhhhhh.

GARRETT:

            Uhhhhh.

AARIKA:

All right, that’s it!  I have had it!

GARRETT:

Must you be so loud; you’re interrupting our moping.

AARIKA:

AAAAAAAAAAAH!  That’s the problem.  Look, so Jacob and Jordan didn’t work out.  Is that my fault?  No, you need to cut your losses and move on.

            There is nothing to say,

You cannot be what they want

They did what they had to do

            Now it’s up to you

            Move on

            Stop worrying where you’re going

Move On

If you can know where you’re going

You’ve gone

Just keep moving on

They chose, and your world was shaken,

So what?

Their choice may have been mistaken

The choosing was not

You have to move on

Look at what you want

Not at where you are

Not at what you’ll be

Look at all the things they did for you

Opened up your eyes

Taught me how to see

Notice every tree

MEAGHAN AND GARRETT:

Trust myself enough to move on

I want to explore the light

I want to know how to get through

Through to something of my own

THE THREE:

Move on

Move on

AARIKA:

Stop wondering which direction is right

You think that you’ve found perfection

And then overnight

You keep moving on

Look at what you’ve done

Then at what you want

Not at where you are

What you’ll be

Look at all the things they’ve done for you

Let me give to you

Something they did not

Think of what you had

Not the things you could have shared

Just the best of what was there

Like the care,

And the feeling,

And the light!

Moving on!

You did not belong

Together
You will never belong together

You have to move on

Settle for the glow

Time for letting go

Now the moment’s gone

Time for moving on

Move on

Move on

MEAGHAN:

You know what Aarika?  You’re right.  Garrett, let’s go get some ice cream!

GARRETT:

            Why?

MEAGHAN:
Because we like ice cream, and we can celebrate how our world is open again!

GARRETT:

            Okay.

(They walk out.  Aarika shrugs.  She sits down, and begins to read when Randi comes in, and thinks she’s alone.)

RANDI:

            A matchbox of our own

A fence, of real chain link,

A grill out on the patio,

            Disposal in the sink.

            A washer and a dryer,

            And an ironing machine

In the tract house that we share

            Somewhere that’s green.

He rakes and trims the grass

He loves to mow and weed

            I cook like Betty Crocker,

And I look like Donna Reed

            There’s plastic on our furniture

To keep it neat and clean

            In the Pine-sol scented air

            Somewhere that’s green.

            Between our frozen dinner

            And our bedtime, nine-fifteen

            We snuggle watching Lucy

On our big, enormous 12-inch screen

            I’m his December Bride,

            He’s Father, he knows best.

            Our kids watch Howdy Doody,

As the sun sets in the west.

A picture out of Better Homes and Gardens magazine

            Far from, this school,

            I dream we’ll go,

            Somewhere that’s green.

RANDI:

You wanted to talk to me?

JACOB:
Yeah, I know Garrett just broke up with you, and it’s probably too soon to ask this, but here goes.  I’ve been looking for someone since Meaghan and I split up, and no one has met my criteria, except, you.  SO I was wondering-

RANDI:

Stop!  You should have asked me sooner!

 (Aarika cannot stand it anymore)

AARIKA:
Oh my!  What the heck are you doing?  You’re two exes just left here with a new resolve after moping about and here you are hooking up.  Meaghan is going to flip!

JACOB:
            Oh well.

AARIKA:

That’s all you can say, oh well?

RANDI:
Goodness Aarika, it’s not like we’re getting married.

AARIKA:
            ARG! (She storms out)

(Garrett and Meaghan return)

MEAGHAN:
I can’t believe I left my purse in here.  I’m such a- Oh, hi, are you two?

RANDI:

            Yes.

GARRETT:
            Come on Meg, Ice Cream!

(Cameron and Garrett enter)

CAMERON:
Come on before all the cookie dough is gone.  Meg… Meg?

(The lights instantly shift to down lighting with a spot only on Meaghan)

MEAGHAN:

I don’t believe this.  You chose her over me?  Someone you can “control” and force to live out your perfect Beaver Cleaver lifestyle?  I don’t believe this.  I loved you, but-

            I was cheated by you

And I think you know when

So you made up your mind

It must come to an end.

            Look at me now,

            Will I ever learn?

            I don’t know how,

            But I suddenly loose control

There’s a fire within my soul.

Just one look and I can hear a bell ring

One small look and I forget everything

            Whoa-whoa

ALL:

Mamma mia!

            Here I go again

My, my how can I resist ya’?

            Mamma mia!

            Does it show again?

My, my, just how much I missed ya’?

MEAGHAN:

            Yes, I’ve been broken hearted

Blue, since the day we parted

Why, why did I ever let you go?

ALL:

            Mamma mia!

            Now I really know,

My, my I should not have let you go!

MEAGHAN:

I was angry and sad when I knew we were through

I can’t count all the times I have cried over you

            Look at me now,

            Will I ever learn?

            I don’t know how,

            But I suddenly loose control

There’s a fire within my soul.

Just one look and I can hear a bell ring

One small look and I forget everything

            Whoa-whoa

ALL:

Mamma mia!

            Here I go again

My, my how can I resist ya’?

            Mamma mia!

            Does it show again?

My, my, just how much I missed ya’?

MEAGHAN:

            Yes, I’ve been broken hearted

Blue, since the day we parted

Why, why did I ever let you go?

ALL:

            Mamma mia!

            Now I really know,

My, my I should not have let you go!

ALL:

Look at me now,

            Will I ever learn?

            I don’t know how,

            But I suddenly loose control

There’s a fire within my soul.

Just one look and I can hear a bell ring

One small look and I forget everything

            Whoa-whoa

Mamma mia!

            Here I go again

My, my how can I resist ya’?

            Mamma mia!

            Does it show again?

My, my, just how much I missed ya’?

            Yes, I’ve been broken hearted

Blue, since the day we parted

Why, why did I ever let you go?

            Mamma mia!

            Now I really know,

My, my I should not have let you go!

(The bell rings, saving Randi and Jacob.)

GARRETT:
I’ll go get the car warmed up.  Cameron, will you take care of her?

CAMERON:

            Cha.

MEAGHAN:

            Oh my God.

(She breaks down.)

CAMERON:

Meaghan, pull yourself together and open your eyes!  Jacob was lucky to have you.  I would kill for that chance.

MEAGHAN:
            What do you mean?

CAMERON:

            I peer through windows

            Watch life go by

            Dream of tomorrow,

            And wonder why?

            The past is holding me

            Keeping life at bay

            I wander lost in yesterday

            Longing to fly

            Scared to try

            But if someone like you

            Found someone like me

            Then suddenly,

Nothing would ever be the same

            My heart would take wing

            And I feel so alive

If someone like you found me.

            So many secrets,

            I long to share

            All I have needed

            Is someone there?

To help me see a world

            I’ve never seen before

A love to open every door

            To set me free

            So I can soar

            If someone like you

            Found someone like me

            Then suddenly,

Nothing would ever be the same

There’d be a new way to live

            A new life to love

If someone like you found me

            Oh, if someone like you

            Found someone like me

            Then suddenly,

Nothing would ever be the same

            My heart would take wing

            And I’d feel so alive

            If someone like you

            Loved me…

            Loved me…

            Loved me.

MEAGHAN:

            Oh my God, I never

(Cameron dashes off as Garrett returns)

GARRETT:

Whoa.  What was that all about?

MEAGHAN:
Cameron’s been in love with me all this time.  I never knew.

GARRETT:

Well, how do you feel about him?

MEAGHAN:

            I’m not sure.

PRINCIPAL:

Attention students: there is a mandatory assembly in the auditorium.

GARRETT:

            What’s this all about?

MEAGHAN:

            I dunno.

Scene Three: The Auditorium

(The main drape begins to lower.  A podium is moved center.  Principal Notnilc crosses to it.  Meaghan and Garrett enter and stand along the side of the house with the rest of the cast located in the front two rows.)

PRINCIPAL:

After weeks of this protesting, I have come to the end of my rope.  So, I will make this short and sweet. This is direct from Superintendent Nagear. From here on out, anyone who breaks either of the rules again, will be granted immediate expulsion from the school.  This will be permanent and is effective immediately.  Thank you.

(He quickly exits.  The cast gets up and starts yelling ad libs.  They turn to Garrett who is walking onto the stage.)

GARRETT:

Come on, let’s fight this!  He can’t do this to us!

MEAGHAN:
Gar- come on, we can’t fight it now.  It’s bigger then Notnilc.  We just can’t fight it.

GARRETT:

Yes we can!  WE still have the media.

JACOB:
            We’re old news now.

GARRETT:

            No, no, it isn’t.

CAMERON:
Come on, it’s over now.  Let it rest.  We had a good go.

GARRETT:

            No.  (Breaks down)  No.

            When this all began…

            I knew there’d be a price…

            Once upon a dream,

            I conceived a perfect plan

That would change the face of man,

            Once upon a dream.

            For it was my dream

            To create a perfect world

            From this cold imperfect world

            Once upon a dream.

            And I was unafraid

            The dream was so exciting

But now I see it fade

            And I am here alone

            Once upon a dream

All I had to do was try

To late now to wonder why

            It can never be

            Could it be again?

            Once upon a dream

MEAGHAN:

I’m sorry Garrett, I really am.

BRITTNEY:

            You did all you could.

GARRETT:

It just wasn’t enough.  I lost my boyfriend and my dream all in one week.

AARIKA:
Oh, hey, didn’t we have that thing to work on for…Government?

KRISTINA:

            Yeah, that thing that’s due.

(They leave him alone.)

GARRETT:

            And I was unafraid

            The dream was so exciting

But now I see it fade

            And I am here alone

            Once upon a dream

            He was heaven-sent to me

Was it never meant to be?

            Was he just a dream?

            Can’t we begin again?

            Once upon a dream.

(Jordan, unnoticed by Garrett, has entered for this.  The light lingers on Garrett for a moment and…

…Blackout.  The lights come up on a wagon, it is Meaghan’s bedroom, and she is lying on her bed.  Lights come up on Cameron’s room with him in it.  A thunderstorm starts.  The rain hits their windows and they stare out them.)

Scene Four: Various Bedrooms

MEAGHAN:

I sit and watch the rain

And see my tears run down

            The windowpane.

CAMERON:
I sit and watch the sky

And I can hear it heave a sigh.

MEAGHAN:

I think of him how we are.

CAMERON:

And when I think of her,

            Then I remember

BOTH:

            Remember.

CAMERON:
            In her eyes,

            I can see

            Where my heart

            Longs to be.

MEAGHAN:

            In his eyes

            I see a gentle glow

And that’s where I’ll be safe

            I know.

            Safe in his arms,

            Close to his heart-

CAMERON:

            But I don’t know

            Quite where to start…

MEAGHAN:

            By looking in those eyes.

            Will I see beyond tomorrow?

CAMERON:

            By looking in those eyes

Will I see beyond the sorrow, that I feel?

MEAGHAN:

Will his eyes reveal to me

            Promises or lies?

But he can’t conceal from me

            The love, in his eyes

CAMERON:
            They’re like an open book!

            Her eyes!

MEAGHAN:
            I know their every look!

            His eyes

BOTH:

But most of all the look that

            Hypnotized me

CAMERON:
            If I am I wise

            I will walk away

            And gladly

MEAGHAN:

            But sadly, I’m not wise

            It’s hard to talk away

            The mem’ries that you prize

CAMERON:
            Love is worth forgiving for

MEAGHAN:

            Now I realize

BOTH:

            Everything worth living for

            Is there in his eyes!

MEAGHAN:

            Love is worth forgiving for

CAMERON:

            Now I realize

BOTH:

            Everything worth living for

            Is there

            In his eyes!

(During the song they have moved until they are in center seeing and not seeing each other.  The spot light lingers on them for a moment and then fades out. A single spot appears on Kristina. When the lights resume we are in Jacob’ and Jordan’s rooms, they are on the phone with each other.)

KRISTINA:

A few weeks have gone by, the new couples are happy and content.  It took Meaghan a little bit of getting used to at first, but she has come to terms with Jacob and Randi, and she and Cameron are doing fine.  Garrett, while still sad about loosing the campaign, has moved on with his life.  He is back to his old joking, gay self.  The prices on the snack machines have gone back down again, and after the little assembly, the protesting has stopped.  However, the school board has now begun to have panel discussions and listen to the students before new polices are created.  Everything seems to be just fine, except for Jordan.  Ever since Jordan overheard Garrett after the assembly, he’s begun to question if leaving him was such a good idea.

JORDAN:

I can’t believe I let him go.  He was a great guy.  He was fun, charming, and always there for me.  And he kept my secret.

JACOB:
I don’t see why you broke up with him either.

JORDAN:

I got scared.  I didn’t want people to know.  Do you think he’d take me back?

JACOB:

I’m pretty sure he’s moved on.  Did you love him?

JORDAN:

Yes.  I did.  Hey, can I call you back.  I need some time to think.

JACOB:

            Sure.  Bye.

JORDAN:
Bye.  (Jacob’ room rolls out)  What am I going to do?  I had him, and I lost him.  I loved him, but at the time I couldn’t.  Why?  I mean, even looking at the pictures.  His face is so bright and happy.

            And in my twisted face

            There’s not the slightest trace

Of anything that hints at kindness

And he seems so comfortable, and happy.

            And from my tortured shape

            No comfort, no escape

I see, but deep within is utter blindness.

I’m going to call him!  Wait.  No.  He’ll laugh.  It’s hopeless.

            Hopeless

            As my dream dies

            As the time flies

            Love is a lost illusion

            Helpless

            Unforgiven

            Cold and driven

            To this sad conclusion

He was always so alive.  He had this joy that just emanate from him.  He was beautiful, in his own little way.  He tried so hard.  He loved me unconditionally, and I just shut him out.

            No beauty could move me

            No goodness improve me

No power on earth, if I can’t love him

            No passion could reach me

            No lesson could teach me

How I could have loved him and made him love me, too.

If I can’t love him, then who?

Long ago I should have seen

All the things I could have been

Careless and unthinking I moved onward.

That was all.  Just focus on the future.  I hurt him, I hurt him bad, and now, he’s hurting me.  I’m in grief.

            No pain could be deeper

            No life could be cheaper

No point anymore if I can’t love him

            No spirit could win me

            No hope left within me

Hope I could have loved him, and that he’d set me free

            But it’s not to be

            If I can’t love him

Let the world be done with me!

But I can love him.  I can.  But will he love me.  What if he doesn’t?  It would kill me.  Absolutely kill me.

            No pain could be deeper

            No life could be cheaper

No point anymore if he can’t love me

No hope he would do so

            No dream to pursue, so

I look to myself, despise all the things I see

            For I know if he

            Cannot love me

Then the world is done with me!

Scene Five: The Theatre Room

(The lights resume to the class set.  Garrett is talking to Meaghan, Cameron, Randi and Jacob.)

GARRETT:

Wow, you’re going to double tonight?  But, just a few weeks ago Meaghan would have killed the two of you.

MEAGHAN:

That was before I found out how Cam and I felt about each other.

CAMERON:

Once you go black, you won’t want to go back.  Ouch.

RANDI:

I guess you could say we’re perfect together.

            Whenever my world falls apart,

I never lose hope or lose heart.

            Whatever the form

            Of the storm

            That may brew

I’ve got you to lean on.

JACOB:

            When everything’s hopelessly grey,

            You’ll notice I’m youthfully gay!

            There isn’t a sing-

            Le great thing

            I can’t do,

Not with you to lean on.

BOTH:
With you to depend on, I’ll never quit

            There isn’t a murder I couldn’t commit!

            I feel like a love-

            Ly girl/boy of

            Twenty-two

I’ve got you to lean on!

JACOB:

I’ve got you to lean on!

RANDI:

I’ve got you to lean on!

(Dance)

MEAGHAN:
Whenever my world turns to dust,

I’ve always got someone to trust,

            Whatever the sort

            Of support

            That I need,

I’ve got you to lean on!

CAMERON:

            When everything’s hollow and black.

You’ll always have me at your back.

JACOB AND CAMERON:

No matter how hollow

            We’ll follow

            Your lead-

And with us to lean on, you’ll succeed.

RANDI AND MEAGHAN:
What comfort it is to have always known

That if he should catch me, I won’t go alone.

            I’ll always give credit

            Where credit

            Is due-

I’ve got you to lean on!

BOYS:

I’ve got you to lean on!

THE FOUR:

I’ve got you to lean on!

(Dance)

(The Final bell rings.)

JACOB:

            See you Monday, Gar.

GARRETT:
See ya’!  Meaghan, call me tomorrow, I want details!  I love those kids.  Where else are you going to- Oh?  Hello.

JORDAN:

Sorry about the rule and all.

GARRETT:

Yeah, well, what do you do?

JORDAN:

It shouldn’t have ended that way.

GARRETT:

            Sort of like us?

JORDAN:

            Huh?

GARRETT:

Never mind.  I’ll see you around.

JORDAN:

Wait!  Look, I’ve never met anyone like you before, and I made a big mistake.  I shouldn’t have dumped you.

GARRETT:

            What are you saying?

JORDAN:

I guess that, well I want to start over.  I mean, we lost the campaign, and, I’ve adjusted now, and I’m ready to open up, so what do you say.

GARRETT:

            What brought this revelation around?

JORDAN:

I heard you after we lost, and well, it got me thinking.  So, can we give it another shot?

GARRETT:

            I don’t want to talk

About the things we’ve gone through

Though it’s hurting me

Now it’s history

I’ve played all my cards

And that’s what you’ve done too

Nothing more to say

No more ace to play

The winner takes it all

The loser standing small

Beside the victory

That’s my destiny

I was in your arms

Thinking I belonged there

I figured it made sense

Building me a fence

Building me a home

Thinking I’d be strong there

But I was a fool

Playing by the rules

The gods may throw the dice

Their minds as cold as ice

And someone way down here,

Looses someone dear

The winner takes it all

The loser has to fall

It’s simple and it’s plain

Why should I complain?

But tell me, does he kiss

Like I used to kiss you?

Does it feel the same

When he calls your name?

Somewhere deep inside

You must know I miss you

But what can I say

Rules must be obeyed

The judges will decide

The likes of me abide

Spectators of the show

Always staying low

The game is on again

A lover or a friend

A big thing or a small

The winner takes it all

I don’t wanna talk

Because it makes me feel sad

And I understand

You’ve come to shake my hand

I apologize

If it makes you feel bad

Seeing me so tense

No self-confidence- but you see

The winner takes it all

The winner takes it all

The game is on again

A lover or a friend

A big thing or a small

The winner takes it all

The winner takes it all!

JORDAN:

Do you really feel that way?

GARRETT:

I’m sorry.  Where are you going?

(He storms out of the class, with Garrett chasing him. The hall drop descends and the full company is on stage.  Jordan grabs a chair and whistles.  The noise and movement stops and turns to him.)

Scene Six: The Hallways

JORDAN:
Attention everyone!  My name is Jordan Sparks, and I want to tell the world who I love.  I love that man right there.

(He singles out Garrett, the crowd parts, and he stands there frozen.)

I was a moron. I had a chance with him and blew it.  I would do anything to prove to him that I’m not a waste of his time, and get another chance.  So, will you give it to me?

GARRETT:

I already told you.  No.  I won’t.  You had a chance and you blew it.  Now it’s time to face the music, and do what I did.  Move on.

JORDAN:

Then there is nothing I can say, is there?

GARRETT:

            Yes, Jordan, there was.

You could’ve told me not to go.

            Say it to me.

            Tell me not to go.

            Tell me that you’re hurt.

            Tell me you’re relieved

            Tell me that you’re bored-

Anything, but don’t assume I know.

            Tell me what you feel!

JORDAN:

            What I feel?

You know exactly how I feel.

            Why do you insist

            You must hear the words

When you know I cannot give you words

            Not the ones you need.

            There’s nothing to say.

I cannot be what you want.

GARRETT:

            What did you want, Jordan?

JORDAN:

I wanted you, but I left.

GARRETT:

There was no room for me.

JORDAN:

I could not accept who I am.

            I am what I do-

            Which you knew

            Which you always knew

Which I thought you were a part of

GARRETT:

            No.

            You are complete, yes,

            You are your own.

            We do not belong together,

            You are complete, yes,

            You are alone

            I am unfinished

            I am diminished

            With or without you

            We do not belong together.

And we should have belonged together

What made it so right together

Is what made it all wrong

            No one is you, no.

            There we agree

            But others will do, though,

            No one is you, and

            No one can be

But no one is me, no,

            No one is me

            We do not belong together

            And we’ll never belong-

            You have a mission

            A mission to see

Now I have one to, Jordan

And we should have belonged together

            I had to move on.

            Goodbye, Jordan.

(He turns and leaves.  Jordan reflects upon this moment as the lights fade.  Aarika is hit with a spot light; she wears a cap and gown.  Brittney, Kristina and Kristen join her, also in caps and gowns.)

AARIKA:

            Well, that concludes the story.

BRITTNEY:

Not quite.  We still have graduation.

KRISTINA:

We have to have a final goodbye.

KRISTEN:

Otherwise we would kind of leave the story hanging.

(Slowly the lights come up on the hall set, the rest of the main group standing, a spot on each.  Streamers and a banner are flown in.)

GARRETT:

            We always have e-mail.

JORDAN:
            We’ll still loose touch.

MEAGHAN:

            We’ve had fun.

CAMERON:

            We’ve sung a little.

JACOB:

            We’ve danced a little.

RANDI:

Now it’s time to pay the piper.

JACOB AND RANDI:

I’ve heard it said

That people come into our lives for a reason.

GARRETT AND JORDAN:

            Bringing something we must learn

            And we are led

MEAGHAN AND CAMERON:

To those who help us most to grow

            If we let them.

THE COUPLES:

And we help them in return

            Well, I don’t know if I believe that’s true

But I know I’m who I am today

            Because I knew you…

JACOB AND RANDI:

Like a Comet pulled from orbit

GARRETT AND JORDAN:

            As it passes a sun

Like a stream that meets a boulder

MEAGHAN AND CAMERON:

            Halfway through the wood

THE COUPLES:
Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better?

            But because I knew you

I have been changed for the good…

KRISTINA:

            It well may be

That we will never meet again in this lifetime

AARIKA:

SO let me say before we part

So much of me is made of what I learned from you

BRITTNEY:

            You’ll be with me

Like a handprint on my heart

KRISTEN:

And now, wherever our stories end

I know you have re-written mine by being my friend

Like a ship blown from it’s mooring

KRISTINA:

By a wind off the sea

BRITTNEY:

Like a seed dropped by a sky bird

AARIKA:

            In a distant wood

THE NARRATORS:

Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better?

            But because I knew you…

THE COUPLES:

            Because I knew you…

ALL:
I have been changed for good…

JACOB, GARRETT, MEAGHAN, AARIKA, KRISTEN:

And just to clear the air

            I ask for forgiveness

For the things I’ve done you blame me for

RANDI, JORDAN, CAMERON, BRITTNEY, KRISTINA:

But then, I guess we know

            There’s blame to share

ALL:
And none of it seems to matter anymore

JACOB, GARRETT, MEAGHAN, AARIKA, KRISTEN:

Like a comet pulled from orbit

As it passes a sun

Like a stream that meets a boulder

Halfway through the wood.

RANDI, JORDAN, CAMERON, BRITTNEY, KRISTINA:

Like a ship blown off its mooring

By a wind off the sea

Like a seed dropped by a bird in the wood.

ALL:

Who can say if I’ve been changed for the better?

I do believe I have been changed for the better.

JACOB, GARRETT, MEAGHAN, AARIKA, KRISTEN:

            And because I knew you…

RANDI, JORDAN, CAMERON, BRITTNEY, KRISTINA:

            Because I knew you…

ALL:

            Because I knew you…

I have been changed for good.

Curtain Call:

There is a black out.  The cast runs off stage and change into their revised costumes.

KRisten:

You can’t stop an avalanche as it races down a hill

KRISTINA:

You can try to stop seasons, yeah, but you know you never will

BRITTNEY:

And you can try to stop my dancing feet, but I just can not stand still

THE THREE:

Cause the world keeps spinning round and round

And my heart’s keeping time to speed of sound

I was lost until I heard the drums

            Then I found my way

            You can’t stop  the beat.

GIRLS:

Every since this whole world began

A woman found that if she shook it

She could shake up a man

And so I’m gonna shake and shimmy it the best that I can

THE THREE:

Cause you can’t stop the motion of the ocean

Or the rain in the sky

You can wander if you wanna,

            But I’ll never ask why

And if you try to hold me down

I’m gonna spit in your eye and say

            You can’t stop the beat.

AARIKA:

You can’t stop a river as it rushes to the sea

GARRETT:

You can try to stop the hands of time, but ya know it just can’t be

JORDAN:

And it they try stop us Garrett, I’ll call the G-L-A-D-D!

ALL:

Cause the world keeps spinning round and round

And my heart’s keeping time to the speed of sound

I was lost till I heard the drums and I found my way

Cause you can’t stop the beat

Ever since we first saw the light

A man and woman like to shake it on a Saturday night

So we’re gonna shake and shimmy it with all of our might today!

‘Cause you can’t stop the motion of the ocean

Or the rain from above

They can try to stop the paradise we’re dreaming of

But they cannot stop the rhythm of two hearts in love

To stay!

‘Cause you can’t stop the beat

MEAGHAN:

You can’t stop my happiness cause I like the way I am

JACOB:

And you just can’t stop my knife and fork when I see a Jacobtmas hma

CAMERON:

So if you don’t like the way I look, well I just don’t give a damn

ALL:

Cause the world keeps spinning round and round

And my heart’s keeping time to the speed of sound

I was lost till I heard the drums and I found my way

Cause you can’t stop the beat

Every since this whole world began

A woman found that if she shook it

She could shake up a man

And so I’m gonna shake and shimmy it the best that I can

Cause you can’t stop the motion of the ocean

Or the rain in the sky

You can wander if you wanna,

            But I’ll never ask why

And if you try to hold me down

I’m gonna spit in your eye and say

            You can’t stop the beat.

You can’t stop today as it comes screaming down the tracks

Yesterday is history, and it’s never comin’ back

Cause tomorrow is a brand new day

And they don’t know white from black

            Aah, Aah, Aah

            Aah, Aah, Aah

            Aah, Aah, Aah

            Come on you principals

Come on and shake your fanny muscles

            PRINCIPALS AND OTHER STUDENTS:

            We can’t

            ALL:

            Yes, you can

            PRINCIPALS AND OTHER STUDENTS:

            No, we can’t

            ALL:

            Yes you can!

            PRINCIPALS AND OTHER STUDENTS:

YES WE CAN!

            ALL:

            You can’t stop the beat

            PRINCIPALS AND OTHER STUDENTS:

Ever since we first saw the sun

IT seems all principals are always

            Trying to please somebody

But now were gonna shake and shimmy it

            And have some fun today

            ALL:

‘Cause you can’t stop the motion of the ocean

Or the rain from above

They can try to stop the paradise we’re dreaming of

But they cannot stop the rhythm of two hearts in love

To stay!
‘Cause you can’t stop the beat

GARRETT:

            One more!

(The hall set flies out, and the black curtain parts.  Lights with the characters names are flown/slid on.  There is a small amount of smoke on the ground. The Ensemble and principals take their bows to give the rest of the cast time to change costumes. The characters will appear in spotlight with their name in this order: Kristen, Kristina, Brittney, Aarika, Meaghan, Randi, Jordan, Jacob, Cameron, and Garrett.  They will take a bow individually)

Kristen:

            I sing the body electric

Kristina:

I celebrate the me and to come

Brittney:

I toast to my own reunion

Aarika:

When I become one with the sun

Meaghan:

And I’ll look back on Venus

Randi:

And I’ll look back on Mars

And I’ll burn with the fires

Jacob:

            Of ten million stars

Cameron:

And in time and in time

Garrett:

            We will all be stars!

(They are joined with the rest of the company.  And begin the second verse.)

All:

            I sing the body electric

I glory in the glow of rebirth

            Creating my own tomorrow

When I shall embody the Earth

            And I’ll serenade Venus

            And I’ll serenade Mars

And I’ll burn with the fire

            Of ten million stars

And in time and in time

            We will all be stars

(Dance.  Half the cast takes the lines in parenthesis.)

            We are the emperors now

            And we are the Czars

And in time and in time

            We will all be stars!

I sing the body electric (Aaah!)

I celebrate the me and to come (Aaah!)

I toast to my own reunion

            (My own reunion)

When I become one with the sun

And I’ll look back on Venus

                         (Look back on Venus)

And I’ll look back on Mars

                          (Look back on Mars)

And I’ll burn with the fire

                          (Burn)

            Of ten million stars

            (Fire of one/five/ten million stars)

            And in time

            And in time

            And In time

            In time

            And In time

            In time

            In time

            We’ll all be stars!

(The signs are going nuts flashing on and on.  There is a pause and then, the final bows, and the curtain closes.)
